Greater Spotted Woodpecker

Look out for this bird, easily spotted by its red cap. Many young birds are out of the nest this month. The commonest woodpecker in the Forest, and a frequent visitor to nearby gardens. This is the species that makes the dramatic drumming sound in the spring and which uses its powerful bill to bore the nest holes you see in many tree trunks.
