A short drive up the hill from Alice Holt brings you to the quiet old village of Binsted. Binsted has many old cottages, including some built in the distinctive local "malmstone". The area around the fine parish church of The Holy Cross is especially picturesque. Viscount Montgomery ("Monty of Alemein") is buried in the churchyard and it's something of a place of pilgrimage for WWii veterans and their families from all over the world. The Cedars is a classic village pub, family-run by Peter Stubbings and his parents, Denise and Tim. It's atmosphere is down-to-earth and unpretentious and there's always a friendly welcome to locals and visitors alike. Most of the food is cooked there and then to order and there's everything from a sandwich, ploughmans or kids' meal up to a full meal from the menu or the frequently updated specials blackboard. There's even an evening takeaway service : fish and chips for £5.50 and a 4 pint flagon of your chosen beer for a tenner. The house bitter is a well kept pint of Courage, plus there are usually two or three guest real ales.Families are welcome and as well as a bar and darts room there's a dedicated restaurant and large beer garden with patio. Peter and his parents are very community-minded and there are often events such as bands ,discos, "horse racing" and spectacular bonfire night fireworks. The Cedars provides a good base for cyclists and walkers ,whether strolling round the various short footpaths through the surrounding fields, or as a stop off along the Hangers Way. Plus there's plenty of car parking to the rear of the pub. Opposite is Binsted recreation ground. High up and overlooking the beautiful North Wey valley, in winter it's reputedly the coldest football pitch in South East England! But it's a fine place to enjoy the cricket or croquet on a warm summer's day. |
